About the Composer
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist. He is considered one of the greatest composers of all time. Bach's music is characterized by its complexity, beauty, and emotional depth. He wrote over 1,000 pieces of music, including concertos, cantatas, oratorios, and sonatas.
Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany, on March 31, 1685. He was the youngest of eight children. His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, was a musician, and Bach began studying music at an early age. Bach's early musical education was primarily focused on the organ, but he also learned to play the violin and the harpsichord.
In 1703, Bach was appointed organist at the New Church in Arnstadt. He held this position for five years, during which time he composed some of his most famous organ works, including the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. In 1708, Bach moved to Weimar, where he was appointed court organist and concertmaster. He held this position for nine years, during which time he composed some of his most famous orchestral works, including the Brandenburg Concertos.
In 1717, Bach was appointed music director at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen. He held this position for six years, during which time he composed some of his most famous chamber works, including the Six Suites for Cello. In 1723, Bach moved to Leipzig, where he was appointed cantor of the St. Thomas Church. He held this position for the rest of his life, during which time he composed some of his most famous sacred works, including the St. Matthew Passion and the B Minor Mass.
Bach died in Leipzig on July 28, 1750. He is buried in the St. Thomas Church.
