The novel opens with the of the three siblings: 16-year-old Ricky, 14-year-old Janie, and 12-year-old Billy. Ricky is a talented musician who dreams of becoming a rock star. Janie is a bright and ambitious student who wants to go to college. Billy is a sensitive and imaginative boy who loves to write stories. The siblings are close, but they are also very different, and they each have their own unique challenges.
Ricky is struggling with his parents' divorce. He feels like he is being torn between two worlds, and he doesn't know where he belongs.
